Richmond Aesthetic Surgery Helps Domestic Violence Survivor

After a breast reconstruction patient shared Amanda’s* story with Dr. Neil Zemmel, he knew he had to help this woman. Amanda had been brutally beaten, sexually assaulted and for years had been living with the physical and emotional scars of this abuse. The attack was so brutal it ruptured her breast implant. For years she has suffered with physical and emotional pain. She hangs a towel over her bathroom mirror when she showers, blocking her reflection and the painful reminder. Dr. Zemmel wants to help Amanda recover and is performing a breast revision on her – a surgery that is not covered by insurance and would be out of her reach without Richmond Aesthetic Surgery’s help. Dr. Zemmel’s team is looking forward to helping Amanda with her journey to recovery.

Amanda’s story was recently featured on WWBT/NBC 12 Richmond. In the segment, she told her incredible story and explained the aftermath of the violent incident that has caused her to live with physical and emotional pain for years. During the feature, Dr. Zemmel recounted his reaction to hearing about Amanda and explained what her procedure will entail to achieve the best possible aesthetic outcome.

At the end her segment, Amanda expressed her gratitude to Dr. Zemmel and Richmond Aesthetic Surgery, saying, “It’s just wonderful to know that there’s somebody out there that cares about something that somebody’s gone through and expects nothing in return.”

A Domestic Violence Victim Shares Her Story of Survival and Rebuilding

Richmond woman shares story of domestic violence.

A Richmond area woman who was beaten to an inch of her life begins the path to physical rebuilding and local plastic surgeon is helping her on her journey.

Richmond, VA—*Amanda’s (patient’s name is changed to protect her identity) story began in December 2008. The divorced mother of 2 was sharing an apartment with a man in the Richmond, Virginia area. She began to have a gut feeling that she needed to get away from this man. Her intuition was telling her that something wasn’t “right.” She began to distance herself from him and when he felt her pulling away, he attacked her. This attack lasted 48 hours and finally ended when neighbors heard her screams and called the police.

Amanda was taken to the Medical College of Virginia for treatment. Her daughter said she was beaten beyond recognition. She had broken ribs, was on a ventilator, went into septic shock and her breast implants had been ruptured.

Her attacker was convicted of this brutal crime and was sentenced to 26 years in prison. Amanda not only suffers post-traumatic stress from this attack, but the physical scars that she sees daily (her ruptured implants) are a constant reminder of what she lived through. She says she puts towels on her mirrors before she showers because she doesn’t want to see what this man did to her. She has had to use socks in her undergarments to appear “normal” in public.

Over the last several years, she asked multiple plastic surgeons if they could help her physically be whole again, but none were in the position to do so until she met Dr. Neil Zemmel. Her story touched the Richmond plastic surgeon, and he wants to help her overcome some of what she lived through. He is taking her on as a patient and is performing her surgery at no cost, as she doesn’t have the ability to afford the procedure.

Amanda is sharing her story of survival and rebuilding her life on WWBT/ NBC12 Richmond. She wants women to understand that rape can happen at any age and by someone you know or have a relationship with.

Her story will air February 02, 2017 @ 5pm on WWBT/NBC 12 Richmond. The day the story airs, NBC 12 will offer a Domestic Violence hotline and have counselors on the premises to assist viewers who may need help.

Richmond Aesthetic Surgery Patient Featured in National Television Commercial After Incredible Weight Loss

Richmond Aesthetic Surgery Patient a Spokesperson for Atkins Commercial

A Central Virginia young man is now a spokesperson for “The Atkins” diet brand after losing half his body weight.

Richmond, VA — Just a few years ago Austin Shifflett tipped the scales at 324 pounds. He said a lifestyle of video games and fast food caused his weight to spiral out of control – and made his high school experience terrible. He was bullied and called names by his classmates. Austin took that torment and turned it into motivation. He began eating a low carb diet, exercising religiously and lost half of his body weight in the process.

His inspirational story has been told on several television shows including “The Doctors”. While taping “The Doctors”, Austin learned that Richmond Aesthetic Surgery agreed to take him on as a patient and to help him with something that he could not do on his own – remove 10 pounds of hanging skin which was a side-effect of his dramatic weight loss. Richmond Aesthetic Surgeon Dr. Neil Zemmel said he was so impressed with this young man’s dedication and resolve that he performed the body reconstruction (also known as a body lift) at no charge, helping this special teen complete his total body transformation.

Austin’s determination and transformation has now brought him more than just a new body – he’s being paid to share his success as a spokesperson for the Atkins diet weight loss products (just in time for New Year diet resolutions). Take a look at his new television commercial with actress Alyssa Milano:

You can watch Austin’s weight loss transformation story by following this link:

Richmond Aesthetic Surgery is proud to have played a small part in this young man’s incredible transformation and hopes that his success inspires others across the country to take charge of their life and improve their health.

Austin and Dr. Zemmel are available for interviews. Please contact Andrea Emery Cumbie @ 804-312-4102 for scheduling.

Richmond Aesthetic Surgery Featured on The Doctors

Over the past six months, our team has proudly discussed the details of our patient Austin—a young man who our surgeons performed extensive body contouring after weight loss pro bono. Today, we are excited to announce that our entire team was able to travel to Los Angeles for Austin’s final reveal on the medical-themed talk show “The Doctors,” which aired on November 11th.
In the show’s segment, Austin shared that he had lost almost 170 pounds from diet and exercise, but he still suffered from nearly 10 pounds of excess skin covering his new body. To help the inspiring teenager, our board-certified plastic surgeons volunteered to perform his procedures free of charge. During the episode, Dr. Neil Zemmel, and Megan Goff, PA-C were featured to share the details of his procedures.

Austin underwent two skin removal surgeries. The first was a belt lipectomy, which involved the removal of skin from his lower abdomen around to his flanks and lower back (similar to a tummy tuck). The second surgery was an upper body lift that entailed skin removal and tightening from the chest, around his pectoral areas, and extending to the back area.

Dr. Zemmel described this surgical process as more than just cosmetic—it was a reconstruction to restore function to his body that had been covered with a significant amount of excess skin. Austin and his mother had nothing but rave reviews about their experience at Richmond Aesthetic Surgery, and we are proud to have helped such an inspiring young man in his journey to be his healthiest self.
In the words of Austin’s mother: “He’s there, after lots of hard work and thanks to the entire team at Richmond Aesthetic Surgery—that whole staff from beginning to end has been fabulous. We couldn’t have asked for a better surgeon team at all.”

To view Austin’s and our surgical team’s feature on “The Doctors,” feel free to watch the video below:
