A tummy tuck is one of the most effective ways to eliminate excess skin from the abdomen for a smoother, flatter stomach—particularly for patients who have undergone significant weight loss or women who have had one or more pregnancies. As with any major surgery, Dr. Zemmel educates his tummy tuck patients on what they can expect in the days and weeks following their procedure so they can properly prepare.

Tummy tuck surgery—whether performed alone or in a mommy makeover—typically requires patients to stay in the hospital overnight, where our team of nurses can monitor their recovery. Immediately after tummy tuck surgery, it is normal to experience mild swelling. Any discomfort after the procedure can be easily managed with a combination of oral and IV medication. Dr. Zemmel also ensures the body remains well-hydrated after surgery with IV fluids. The following morning, patients are usually discharged.

Before your surgery, you will be given detailed recovery instructions, including best practices for showering and changing your dressings. Though it may take a few days for your abdomen to adjust and relax, Dr. Zemmel recommends standing and walking around as soon as you feel comfortable enough to do so.

After five or six days, your plastic surgeon will see you for a follow-up appointment. At this time, any sutures that are not absorbed can be removed, and a light compression garment should be worn to facilitate the healing process for the next three to four weeks. Strenuous lifting and exercising should be avoided during this time, though most patients return to work one to two weeks after surgery. Once your tummy tuck recovery is complete, you can begin to enjoy your slimmer, more toned figure.
